Seagate uncorks new high performance notebook PCs and hard drives

Saturday, July 29, 2006

Seagate Technology has announced three families of 2.5” notebook PC hard drives built on perpendicular recording technology to deliver mammoth capacities of up to 160GB. The new products include a notebook disc drive that combines rotating disc storage with flash memory for ultra-power efficiency, faster boot-ups and greater reliability; a data encrypting drive that delivers the highest levels of protection for information on lost, stolen or retired notebook PCs; and a 7200-RPM model for super-speedy laptops.

The Momentus 5400 PSD brings together a high performance hard drive and flash memory in a single hybrid device. Seagate hybrid drives resume operation from hibernation up to 20 percent faster than traditional models since frequently accessed data is written to the flash cache before a system goes to sleep. Seagate's Momentus 5400 PSD hard drives also reduce power draw by up to 50 percent and extends battery life - especially important in mobile applications by reducing platter spin time.

The Momentus 5400.2 FDE provides an easy, cost-effective way to prevent unauthorized access to all notebook PC data, not just selected files or partitions, in case the system or disc drive is lost, stolen, retired or resold.

The Momentus 7200.2 with a 7,200-RPM spin speed, 8MB of cache and up to 160GB of capacity, delivers high capacity and performance in a 2.5-inch notebook hard drive.

Momentus 5400 PSD, Momentus 5400.2 FDE and Momentus 7200.2 are scheduled to ship in the first half of 2007. The hard drives will be available in 40GB to 160GB capacities.
