SMC's new Gigabit L3 switch

Tuesday, November 09, 2004

SMC Networks has added the 1000 standalone layer 3 12 SFP port managed switch with four fixed Gigabit uplinks, SMC8612XL3, to its TigerSwitch product family. Useful for connecting and routing between distant networks or VLANs-up to 100km, the SMC8612XL3 leverages layer 2, 3 and 4 Gigabit switching capability. This increases router performance and overall network speed and efficiency by identifying and prioritizing traffic flow with OSPF and DVMRP under IP/RIP protocols.

The new switch calculates the shortest transmission path for all communications to ensures that mission-critical data receive priority across subnets or VLANs. A downloadable firmware upgrade gives more Layer 3 benefits, adding PIM-DM to the switch for network architectures that are sparsely distributed, and CIDR Supernetting to decrease route flapping.

At the layer 2 switching level, the TigerSwitch 1000 is equipped with features such as 802.1p, CoS with IP precedence, DiffServ, 802.1Q, private VLANs, with future software upgrade to 802.1s, and SNTP for ease of network administration. The switch is designed to handle bandwidth-intensive multimedia deployment such as VOIP, video conferencing, or streaming media with ease.
