Sun Microsystems' Sun Tech Days, a global developer event, was held amidst a gathering of developers, executives representing companies and students from across the globe in Hyderabad between February 27th and 29th.

Addressing the gathering, Rich Green, Executive VP, Sun Microsystems in his keynote address said, "India is witnessing tremendous growth not just in the business but also on the web. This growth would only get bigger and better in the coming quarters. Web economy would continue to grow and new applications would enable life on the web. Free and open source is the engine that powers this innovation.

With open source revolution growing by leaps, application development and project management is estimated to grow to $127 million in 2007. Applications and content are converging and application developers are evolving. Talking about this aspect, Green said, "Traditional models such as cycle times were traditionally based from month to years, but now things need to be immediate and iterative. Also, one has to create content everyday and update it in real time."

Talking on the role of developers in this open source event, Green averred, "Developers are the backbone of software development and open communities; they create new possibilities, inspire thought and drive innovation."

"Open source is all about participation and as an organization, which bases its business model on open source, Sun strongly believes that sharing and collaborating with the developer community is the key to building opportunities."

The theme for this year's session was 'Open Opportunities' and covered technologies such as Java EE, JRuby, JavaFX, NetBeans, Java SE, OpenJDK, OpenSolaaris amongst others.

With the developer population of Sun growing in the country and standing at 652,610, Green stressed that the conference would highlight the importance for the Indian developer community to graduate to the next level of contributing, competing and collaborating on platforms of global technological expertise.
