Driven by the need for a universal and impartial platform where any issues related to IT can be resolved neutrally, dealers and partners in Siliguri have joined hands to float the North Bengal IT Forum (NBIF). The specialty of the newly formed forum is that all members will have an equal say and role to play. Any individual who is related to IT can join the forum as a member. He need not be a dealer or partner, but can be IT professional or a user.

According to internal sources, the forum was conceptualized about a month back and was floated recently after a preliminary round of elections was held where board members were chosen. Presently the total member strength of the forum is 60. "We have decided to hold elections every four months for the first one year so that roles and responsibilities shared by the members can be rotated accordingly and everyone is familiar with operations and management of the forum," informed Amitabha Bose, Member, NBIF.

The forum is supposed to work like a society and will be involved in generating mass awareness of IT and its usage at the grassroots level. "We have tied up with the local governing body in order to spread IT to remote villages. We will be donating used PCs to the local schools and government run village training centers and will bear all the maintenance costs," said Nabendu Dey, Member, NBIF. NBIF will also appoint trainers who will train the students on the fundamentals of computer applications. The project will be run through funds raised from donations by the members. "Gradually we will create a separate fund for this purpose so that regular flow of money remains and the mission runs uninterruptedly," Dey added.

The forum will also take care of all local, warranty and service-related issues. In future, NBIF plans to include interested end customers as its member in lieu of a nominal charge. It will meanwhile develop a proper procedure through the forum on the warranty support issues. The forum is also planning to develop an online job bank for IT professionals.
