BANGALORE
APRIL 2, 2007

Intel Technology, along with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Microsense, launched the "Unwire Pune" project, making that city the first one in the country to have commercial meshed Wi-fi and WiMax deployment.

This project provides Pune an untethered fast network access to millions of users, PMC said in a statement.

The Phase one of the project deployment would provide wireless connectivity to an area of 20 sq. km, covering Deccan Gymkhana, Sambhaji Park, Aundh, Baner and Model Colony.

This phase is likely to be completed in six months and the entire project of 250 sq km of the PMC would be rolled out in the next 12-18 months, the statement said.

Dr Nitin Kareer, Commissioner of PMC, said, "PMC is proud to make Pune the first city in the country to be unwired. We have worked to identify the right technology option and partners, Intel and Microsense, to actualize the digital revolution in the city of Pune."

PMC selected Intel India in 2006 as the chief technology and program management consultant to architect the project. Microsense was selected as the service provider to roll out the network and offer broadband wireless services.

R Sivakumar, MD, Intel (South Asia), said, "Intel believes that this endeavor "Unwiring Pune" is a significant leap in making broadband ubiquitous connectivity, accessible to the common man. Demonstrating how technologies transform communities and people's lives; this project will enable better education, healthcare, agricultural productivity and income; while improving small business and e-government access."
