Until
now, Symantec's consumer products like Norton Anti-Virus protected PCs against
viruses and worms. With interactions and transactions increasing on the Net, the
company is looking to develop products to protect a PC from threats during the
entire stage of transaction.
“Threats
have become more individualized. Hackers are writing viruses that can get bank
account and credit card numbers. We now want to protect individual
transactions,” said Anil Chakravarthy, Vice President, India, Technical
Operations, Symantec.
This
security service will distinguish legitimate sites from illegal or suspect sites
by flagging the ones that are safe for transaction from the ones that are risky.
Symantec is terming this new wave Security 2.0. The transaction would be coded
with encryption software.
An
anti-phishing component, back-up and PC tune-up capabilities would also be
included. The Beta version of this holistic protection system that has been
christened Norton 360, will be launched by the end of the year.
While
Norton 360 is not being developed at Symantec's development center in Pune,
Chakravathy does not rule out this happening in future. The Pune center has been
instrumental in developing data center products and file systems management.
The
company plans to double its current Indian team of 1700 in the next two years.
It is also on the lookout for a second development center outside Pune, but has
not zeroed in yet on a possible destination.
The
company has outsourced its customer support for consumer products to Sutherland
and iSeva.
