The company board of directors approves Narayana Murthy as non-executive chairman, additional director

Infosys Technologies Ltd board of directors has passed a resolution favoring NR Narayana Murthy as additional director of the company from August 21, 2006.

Murthy, who turns 60 on August 20, will retire the same day.

The board also appointed Murthy as non-executive chairman of the company and chief mentor.

During the company's annual general meeting, Murthy had said that he would be vacating chief mentor position on August 20. "Though I will be vacating my present posts formally on August 20 when I turn 60 and retire as chairman and chief mentor, I will continue as non-executive chairman if the board approves at its meeting on July 11,” he said.

Meanwhile, Infosys board has promoted Kris Gopalakrishnan as President, Chief Operating Officer and Joint Managing Director of the company. Earlier he was COO and Deputy Managing Director.

Nandan M Nilekani, who was president, CEO and Managing Director will now become CEO and Managing Director.

According to sources, Nilekani is likely to be made the executive chairman of Infosys. An official announcement in this regard is expected next month.

Infosys board now consists of 17 directors including the founders. Sen Larry Pressler recently didn't seek the re-appointment to the board. The company has inducted David L Boyles and Jeffrey Kehman as additional directors of the company.
