NEW DELHI
May 19, 2006

The number of Internet users seeking jobs online in India has increased 71 percent to 6.5 million in 2005-06 from 3.8 million in 2004-05. According to an Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) study, the number of online job seekers is expected to cross 9.2 million this year (2006-07).

The study also revealed that the estimated market size of the Indian online recruitment industry will reach Rs 241 crore for 2006-07, from the current Rs 145 crore in 2005-06. The industry is also likely to maintain a year-on-year growth in excess of 60 percent.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Crosstab Marketing Services in January 2006 with a base of 3269 Internet users. India's Internet population stands at 38.5 million and is expected to touch 100 million by 2007-08. Job search is one of the top five key online activities that Indians do, the other four being emailing, surfing, chatting and searching.

Maharashtra topped the list of the online job seekers with 26 percent of the respondents, followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Among cities, Mumbai and Delhi topped the list with 17 percent share respectively, followed by Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore.

Junior, mid-level and senior executives accounted for more than 50 percent of online job seekers.
