Telsima Communications, developer of WiMAX-based Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) and DCME voice compression solutions, is launching a suite of WiMAX solutions – the StarMAX range of products, targeted at the Indian market. The StarMAX systems combine a System-on-a-Chip (SoC) based solution with proprietary RF design and patent-pending smart antenna technology. 

The Telsima product line includes StarMAX 4100 Series of WiMAX Base Stations, StarMAX 2100 Series of WiMAX Subscriber Stations, StarMAX NMS and StarMAX ProVision. The company is also offering WiMAX RF simulation to support the network planning and to estimate the capacity and coverage of the planned WiMAX infrastructure.

Ruchir Godura, VP-Customer Support and Marketing Worldwide Sales, Telsima said, “Market in India is extremely strong. India is a little different from the rest of the developing world. Very few copper lines are available here and that too is owned by BSNL. In India, large number of private operators getting into broadband and they don't have copper, so the most suitable solution for them is the wireless solution. It is estimated that by 2009, India will have 40 million PCs and 10 to 20 million broadband connections. Out of the total broadband connection, my projection is that half would be on wireless.”

The company would focus on both private operators as well as the government for its StarMAX range of products. Godura said, “We are definitely targeting the government sector as well, which includes BSNL, MTNL. There are a lot of e-governance projects going on in India and various states are implementing rural broadband connectivity for bringing e-governance into the smallest towns and villages. And again, for such projects wireless broadband is the most appropriate technology.”

Referring to the USP of the company's product portfolio, Godura said, “We go beyond selling base stations and subscriber stations and also provide our customers with tools like the RF planning tool, which helps operators in designing the network and NMS, which allows the operator to manage each and every single subscriber station from a centralized location. The RF planning tools tend to vary depending on the terrain of the city. Need a typical sort of model and we are customizing this model for the Indian town.”

Telsima currently employs around 125 people in India. It is also setting up a global sales and marketing center in Gurgaon. “We are looking at a fairly large market in India and project that over the next one year we could generate a business worth $20 million to $30 million from India,” said Godura.
