Panasonic has entered the Indian notebook computer market with the launch of a range of ToughBook mobile computers. The range includes the rugged range-Toughbook18 and ToughBook 29, the semi-rugged-ToughBook 51 and ToughBook 73, ultra-portables-ToughBook W2 and ToughBook Y2. These notebooks are available through Panasonic's sole distributor Third Wave Exim at a starting price of Rs 1,75,000 for semi rugged and fully rugged at Rs 2,50,000 onwards.

ToughBooks have a battery life of up to 8.5 hours on a single battery featuring outdoor readable LCD screens and can support up to four integrated wireless WAN technologies (CDMA/EVDO, GPRS/EDGE, GPS and Bluetooth) all working inside the laptop. ToughBooks are made as per US military wartime specifications (MIL) certified. All ToughBooks are shock resistant, spill resistant, vibration resistant and dust resistant. Every ToughBook features a full or partial magnesium alloy casing to ensure resistance to exterior effects like bumps, drops and knocks.

Announcing the launch of the new notebooks, Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific (India) Business Head, Shashi Bhushan said, "ToughBooks are available at Delhi and Mumbai markets and are going to be rolled out in Ahmedabad soon. The rugged range is targeted at highly demanding applications such as defense, law enforcement, mining, oil exploration and drilling, telecom and field service."

"ToughBooks are made as per US military wartime specifications (MIL-certified) and have a market share of 74 percent in the 'ruggedised PC category' as per research," Panasonic Systems Asia Pacific Director, Chishima Susumu said.
