PC sales to cross 4.25m units in FY05-06: MAIT
 
Registering a 20% growth, PC sales crossed 3.6 million units in fiscal 2004-05, wherein there was a decline of 7% in the sale of assembled PCs, while sale of MNC brands grew by 61%

With sound macroeconomic condition and buoyant buying sentiment in the market, PC sales are expected to cross 4.25 million units in fiscal 2005-06, according to a study conducted by MAIT. 

The Indian desktop PC market grossed 3.63 million (36.3 lakh) units, registering a growth of 20% over the last fiscal. The consumption in the first-half of 2004-05 was 1.71 million (17.1 lakh) units, while in the second-half it was 1.91 million (19.1 lakh) units. 

According to the study, the share of assembled PCs reduced from 53% of the total PC sales in 2003-04 to 41% in 2004-05. The unit sales of assembled PCs registered a decline of 7%. The share of the Indian brands grew from 21% in 2003-04 to 24%. It registered a growth of 37% in the overall sales. The share of MNC brands increased from 26% to 35% for the same period. MNC brands reported a growth of 61% in its overall sales.

The top four metros accounted for 38% of the total PCs purchased. In the households segment, Sec A continued to dominate the market with 51% market share, followed by Sec B at 28%, recording a growth of 64% and 22% respectively in FY 2004-05. According to MAIT, in 2004-05, notebook sales doubled to 0.17 million (1.77 lakh) units. The server market registered a negative growth of 8% over the last fiscal as sales declined in the 'Top four cities' by 16% and in the 'Next four cities' by 59%. 

In the networking market, sales of modems improved by 17%, however it declined by 9% in case of network integrated cards and by 70% in case of hubs. The UPS market grew by 48% over 2003-04 with consumption in top four cities showing a growth of 70 %. 

Consumption of monitors surged to 3.64 million (36.4 lakh) units with a growth of 31% over the last financial year 2003-04. The number of active Internet subscribers increased to 2.92 million in March 2005, while the figure was 2.36 million in March 2004. 

MAIT Executive Director, Vinnie Mehta said, “The growth in PC sales can also be attributed to significant consumption by telecom, banking, manufacturing as well as BPO and IT services segment.”
