Retail wave sweeps across Chennai

Retail is in the news again. Chennai city witnessed the opening of two more new specialized retail showrooms in the last one-month. While importer-cum-distributor Cyber Space Abacus opened their retail store focused on gaming last month, software reseller Veeras Infotek inaugurated their second retail showroom for laptops and gadgets in Anna Nagar about a week back. And these retail stores are done with significant investments, said company officials.

“We have spent more than Rs 40 lakh in our retail showroom and built it in DIY (do it yourself) model. DIY is a very popular concept, especially among gamers in western countries, where people walk in to showrooms and build systems on their own, according to their requirements and taste. We are now bringing this concept to India,” said G Vinod, Director-Sales and Marketing, Cyber Space Abacus Pvt Ltd.

The company has created a special corner inside the showroom for gaming enthusiasts, where it has made available high-end demo systems for gaming lovers. “This experience zone would be a first-of-its-kind in the city where people can try latest high-end games such as Quake 4, Far Cry, Prey and more. We offer true high-end systems, starting from Rs 50,000 to Rs 6 lakh, for gamers,” claimed Vinod. For common users, Cyber Space offers PCs starting from Rs 18,000 onwards. It also offers components of all brands, besides peripherals.

Similarly, Veeras Infotek's new showroom in Anna Nagar is a multi-branded store. The company showcases products from various leading vendors here, such as HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony, Acer, Samsung, Creative, iMation and Microsoft, among others. “Our major focus here is on desktops, laptops and Microsoft Xbox. As per the demographic study we have carried out, Anna Nagar showroom has more potential for entry-level laptops, while our Besant Nagar store sells more high-end notebooks. We want to have a showroom in every potential pocket of Chennai, creating a pan-city focus,” said Sudarsan Ranganathan, CEO, Veeras Infotek.
