Displaying solidarity, members of the Computer and Media Dealers Association (CMDA), Pune in a proactive initiative helped put a fraudster behind bars. The person was responsible for the disappearance of many laptops from partners operating in the area.

The modus operandi he used was very simple. The fraudster, in this case, would place orders for laptops and request the partner to make the delivery in a hotel. When the person would come to deliver the laptop, the con man would take the laptop on pretext of showing the samples to his boss in the next room and then flee from the hotel.

Once the association got a wind of what was happening with its member partners, CMDA got into action and complained to the Commissioner of Police, Pune. The case was handed over to Rajendra Joshi, Senior Inspector, Pune Police who diligently put his men and experience to work.
One of the first things that police did was to call the delivery boys, who had been fooled by this fraudster, to draw an identification sketch. The sketch was then circulated to all members of the association.

With the help of this sketch, in the next couple of weeks, the alleged fraudster was caught red-hand-ed. All the goods were recovered and given back to the concerned resellers.

It is well known that laptops and mobiles are doing well and are equally popular with fraudsters on the lookout for a fast buck. Taking up and proactively following up such issues by associations and police surely makes a difference.

Throwing light on the associations involvement with the issue Brijen Shah, VP, CMDA Pune said, “Instead of just relying on the police network, we leveraged our own network of the resellers to trace the culprit.”

According to Shah, this fraudster alternatively also used the age-old trick of issuing forged cheques and vanishing when the cheque was dishonored. “The message that we want to send across to all such people is: Beware - we are alert and won't let you take us for a ride,” elaborated Shah.
