VIA working to revitalize 10k PC space

Monday, May 15, 2006

In order to provide a push to India's ongoing quest for a sustainable PC at Rs 10,000, Taipei-based VIA Technologies is trying to revitalize this space. As part of this initiative, it will identify more partners who can work towards this, as well as strengthening its sales operations in the Indian region.

"There have been many sub-Rs 10k PCs being launched in the Indian market including the HCL initiative where we also have partnered with them. But unfortunately, similar sub-Rs 10k PC initiatives have not taken off so well. We are in the process of revitalizing this whole space and very soon would have our presence in different geographies in the country," informed Richard Brown, VP-Corporate Marketing Division, VIA Technologies.

RICHARD BROWN: Engaging 30 SIs to make affordable PCs for the masses

Aiming to make sure that this PC is available at an affordable cost on a sustainable basis, the company is looking forward to working closely with regional players and system integrators in the Indian region. "We are already working with 20 to 30 system integrators in India and we are engaged in different activities with them," Brown added.

Commenting on the status of sub-Rs 10k PC segment in the Indian region, he said that proper thought needs to be given to identify specific partners in order to offer this sub-10k PC to the end-customer. "We have to put a lot of thought towards identifying the right set of partners for selling these affordable PCs."

He notes that there are three very critical aspects that will decide the success of this segment. One is related to final systems integration of these products, than there is service and the other is related to logistics or distribution of these systems. Of course, if there are small systems, the overall cost of transportation will go down considerably. So VIA is looking carefully at all these aspects to develop this ecosystem in the favor of end customer," he explained.

At present, the company has its innovation center in Mumbai, which was opened in January 2006. "We have a team of professionals in this center working on products and solutions aimed for the global markets," he added.
