Driving home the point that network security isn't just about securing the perimeter with firewalls and IDS or merely arming end user devices like PC or laptops with anti-virus solutions, Check Point Software Technologies announced a new three dimensional 'Intelligent Security Strategy' that extends the concept of security beyond perimeter and takes care of internal and web security as well.

Opening the annual Check Point Experience, a conference of Asian partners and users in Bangkok, company chairman and  CEO Gil Shwed strongly argued in favor of moving beyond the perimeter with intelligent security in the backdrop of growing variety and complexity of challenges.

Presenting the strategic roadmap of the company, he made it clear that Check Point would continue to expand its range of offerings working on new solutions and concepts. He also said that the company would continue to strengthen its partnerships with other vendors so that customers get best of the breed solution. "We will continue to provide best of the breed and intelligent solutions," Gill added.

At the two-day conference attended by top company executives and partners like Nokia, Crossbeam Systems and Resilience among others, internal and web security were clearly identified as the two biggest challenge areas. Urging that there was a need to redefine the perimeter 'inward', META Group senior program director Mark Bouchard said that the current internal / perimeter approach to security is based on flawed assumptions.

"It is wrong to assume that controls would be consistently effective or that threats from internal sources are negligible," he said, adding that threats are no longer focused on the network and the application layer is the new playground of the hackers.

Bouchard also observed that security of mobile and remote endpoints was another challenging area and SSL VPN was  poised to become a dominant approach for remote access as it came with wide variety of security features and advantages. Endorsing Check Point's current strategy, Bouchard said it is good that its solutions are addressing the new emerging dimensions in security holistically.
