As the corporate and government sectors are trying to reach end-users, technologies like SOA and APM will have a great role to play

What is the growth rate expected in the service-oriented architecture (SOA) and application performance management (APM) market?
A survey conducted by Forrester Research reveals that the market for SOA and APM is likely to grow by 24 percent in the next three years. This is four-times the growth which has been witnessed by this segment. Between 2005 to 2008, the growth in this segment was eight percent. But the survey was conducted before the global recession started spreading its wings. Hence it is doubtful whether it will grow with the same speed or not, but still I believe that it would perform well. Our business despite the slowdown, is as strong as it was before.

How important are SOA and APM for the development of your business in India?
After the slowdown in global economy, India is trailing behind just like some of the other global markets. But SOA is evolving at its own pace, along with the APM services.

In the past, we have seen that SOA evolution in some parts of the country has helped the growth of APM too. In India, if both of them take off, then I see a great opportunity for growth here as well. SOA is being used for efficiency improvement and to provide better overall outlook of the service infrastructure. I think being a leader in this segment, the Indian market would have more maturity, once the slowdown is over.

Which sectors are you targeting in India, where SOA and APM could be used?
I see India as a relatively immature yet evolving market. The area in which I see a definite growth and more maturity is government sector.

Government is taking a lot of initiatives to extend its reach to a large population. We are working closely with the Government of India as well on a few projects. Besides this, telecom and banking sectors are also promising.

With the arrival of third-generation services, the demand of SOA and APM would increase.

How has the US recession affected your company?
The perception that customers are not buying is wrong. They are making purchases. The only difference is that, for instance, earlier they used to consider 10 vendors for buying different or same products, but now they are buying only from two or three. If you are on eighth position, then chances are that you will suffer business loss. But if you are leading the pack, then it would not have much impact on it. We are undoubtedly the number one company, so we are not affected in our segment.

What is CA Wily Customer Experience Manager?
It is a performance monitoring product that measures web application performance for each individual customer by user name. This enables both your business managers and IT staff to understand and resolve performance problems before end-users call for support. It monitors user activities, including login, account update or purchase transactions, at the business process level. It offers transaction performance, monitoring performance, trending, automated reporting, customized alerts and integration with other CA and multi-vendor solutions. It supports performance monitoring on any web-based application using HTTP or HTTPS.

Who are your nearest competitors and how do you plan to tackle competition?
We see IBM and HP as our biggest competitor. It gives us an edge above them, as both of them are competitors themselves. Besides, we work with the best partner and people. We have great synergies with people we are working with in India. Having the best technology in this space is our USP.
