Green Is Here To Stay In A Big Way

A new year is upon us. And it is time to tighten belts and pull up socks and decide on some important strategic directions that you need to take to emerge stronger at the end of this year, recession notwithstanding.

This is precisely why we have decided to dedicate the first issue of DQ Channels this year to a subject, which is close to the heart of everyone in CyberMedia India. We believe that green will be the flavor of the year. Like most enterprises we too have already opted on some productivity enhancing and recycling strategies in-house like better usage of paper, switching machines off when not in use, relying on video-conferencing wherever possible, etc.

Other enterprises are also drawing up similar plans to ensure they reduce their operation costs, while maintaining productivity. This is why we believe that what will really take ground this year is green solutions.

As power costs go up, this is one area most enterprises are going to try to cut down on. Especially in power hungry data centers, which is usually the starting point for green IT adoption. Needless to say they need experts who can help them to map and audit their power usage.

Besides another emerging need is for applications to manage power and cooling and build-in process automation are needed, besides monitoring services. And this too is where solution providers (SPs) can act as the missing block to complete the picture of a power-efficient and cost-optimized functional enterprise.

What most mid-sized enterprises are looking for is someone who will sit across the table and address their numerous queries about green IT. Several of them have already started to insist on aligning with SPs who have green skillsets to act as their suppliers.

This is borne out by the results of IDC's Green Poll survey in Asia Pacific, where most respondents revealed that the level of 'greenness' portrayed by the IT suppliers had become increasingly important when they made buying decision on IT-related materials.

So if you are not already offering green, now is a good time to start thinking about it seriously. There are several SPs who already have a headstart in this field, but there is space for several more to join them.

Are you game?
