Like the rest of the industry, IT solution providers, whether big or small,
are also facing a tough time from big companies – even when it is a matter of
employees.
Everybody wants to join a big name. There are so many cases where
people join a solution provider, learn on the job and gain experience, and then
quit to move to a bigger company.
A Nasscom survey recently has come up with some very interesting results on
how small companies are making workplace attractive and interesting enough for
motivating and retaining good people. There are quite a few very good learnings
from these companies. And these are doable.
Empowering is perhaps the single most effective method to get the employee to
stay on. This means that it gives your employee a lot of decision-making powers,
which can be done by just setting processes in place. Your employees have to
just go with the rules you have set.
Employee involvement and participation is an effective way for empowering. If
you involve your team members and employees in all the decisions that you take,
however large or small, there sense of belongingness and responsibility goes up.
The employee feels that his opinion is valued, and he is contributing in
building the company.
Giving nice designation also gives a sense of empowerment to employees. A
'Sales Executive' looking after notebook sales, can be more self-confident or
motivated, if you call him 'Manager – Mobile Computing' or some such fancy
designation. If an employee believes that his company wants to create a special
identity for him, even though he is doing the same old job, he will have more
respect for his company.
However, empowerment is not the only thing that makes workplace exciting.
Smaller companies are actually coming up with many other innovative and creative
ideas to make their employees feel proud of the organization they work for.
But mind you, these are not tricks, just a special affects. If you want
genuine results from these practices, you as an employer will have to believe in
them and sincerely practice them. It will not take your employees long to make
out how serious you are.
We often believe that by empowering we are actually losing control. But the
reality is otherwise. By empowering, leaders are able to create second level
capable and competent people who will actually take a lot of their load away.
Thus they create more valuable time for themselves.
