Kolkata-based distributor Jalan Infotech saw a consistent growth rate of 17 percent in 2007-08 and touched revenue of Rs 160 crore from the eastern market alone. The company opened an office in Mumbai in a bid to have a pan-India presence, but still managed to bring in most of its revenues from the eastern market alone. With five branches in different states of East, Jalan emerged as one of the biggest players in the region.

A bulk of the revenue came from the distribution of Lenovo products. Last FY, Lenovo sales fetched a total business of around Rs 90 crore for the company.

Jalan Infotech expanded its distribution portfolio to become the regional distributor for LG notebook and computers and also entered into an exclusive tie-up for sole distributorship for Zenith PCs. Focusing on the upcountry market, Jalan is expecting a growth of about eight percent in its distribution business from Zenith PCs.

Meanwhile, Jalan has now established itself in the retail segment. With two outlets located at prime locations in Kolkata operating successfully, the company is now concentrating on its distribution ventures. Its retail business contributed approximately Rs 25 crore to its turnover. Now the company is mulling over having two entities for retail and distributorship separately.

Jalan has also tied up with HCL as its distributor for West Bengal and Orissa, and with Reliance to distribute its data cards. With all these latest developments in the company portfolio, Jalan Infotech is posing to be a tough competitor for the market leaders to watch out for in the next year.
