25.Sogo Computers :Restructuring Time

This distributor from the South integrated its retail, reselling and leasing business last year into one entity while focusing on new tie-ups with Samsung and LG

Clocking a turnover of close to Rs 100 crore for 2006-07, Sogo Computers did not have much to rejoice during the year. Reason being a downslide of 33 percent in its revenue over the previous fiscal.

One reason for this average growth was the company's decision to restructure and integrate its three businesses-resale (computers and peripherals), retail (IT and CE) and rentals including leasing and hire purchase.

As part of this strategy, the company also integrated its Iceware chain of outlets while closing down non-performing units in Bangalore. It appointed George Mathew as new management head for the retail arm.

While continuing its focus on retail in IT and CE, Sogo also forged new tie-ups with Samsung and LG last year. Government, education, IT and ITeS continued to be the growth verticals, while home, SMB and BFSI contributed significantly to the revenues of the company. Reselling and system integration added the much-needed fillip to the otherwise dismally performing retail business during 2006-07.

Working with about 110 employees, Sogo saw a 200 percent increase in its upcountry branches' turnover despite its overall negative growth. Having integrated their business and streamlined it, the company now is banking on its upcountry strengths, and plans to increase business by two fold in the next fiscal. Since the branch offices did so well in the last fiscal, Sogo is concentrating on furthering their business at the branch offices, which would add to the company's overall growth next year.
