3.Esys Technologies:Busybody Distribution House

Last December, Teledata Informatics pumped in $105 million into eSys Technologies to help spur its growth further. The distribution house lost Seagate as its vendor and its Regional Director, R Govindan

Singapore-headquartered IT distribution house and PC manufacturer eSys Technologies signed an agreement with Teledata Informatics for a strategic investment of up to $105 million in eSys. The investment will help eSys continue and consolidate its growth, which has seen it growing from first year revenues of S$187 million to revenues of S$3 billion in 2005. This injection of capital from Teledata is bound to help eSys further its business by aiding acquisitions.

While eSys gained the moolah, the year was also marked by some big losses. Seagate terminated the distribution agreements with eSys, amidst allegations of irregularities in compliance to the agreement. Seagate requested an intrusive audit of eSys' documents, which the latter denied and instead alleged that Seagate had often refused shipment as per the agreement.

The next loss was the exit of R Govindan, Regional Director-South Asia, eight months after he moved to Singapore. Meanwhile, the company announced an investment of Rs 1,000 crore in India, including a Rs 250 crore PC manufacturing plant at Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh and a Rs 100 crore investment for a global backoffice in Chandigarh technology park.

Besides, the company was kept busy with several tie-ups during the year. Turbolinux, the Japan-based linux solutions provider, signed up with eSys to leverage on its presence in B and C-category cities, where Turbolinux has no presence. Through this tie-up, eSys acquired a product portfolio that includes Turbolinux's desktop operating system, server operating systems, applications etc.
