STRENGTHS
l Continual focus on niche products resulted in 20% topline growth
l Neutralized losses by adding 400 products to portfolio
WEAKNESS
l Slow in expanding to newer markets, due to lack of qualified manpower
l Faced difficulty in popularizing Gigabyte servers

Mediaman focused on niche products like Flash cards, laptop batteries and memory modules to post a 5% turnover growth in 2003-04 with Rs 112.8 crore. This focus came about after the company posted a negative growth of 3% in the previous fiscal. Though the topline growth of the company was marginal, its bottomline showed an increase of 40%.

Most of the 400 products that Mediaman added to its portfolio in 2003-04 were laptop accessories. The company even created separate profit centers to focus on diverse product streams. For laptop accessories, Flash memory cards and USB products it created the Notebook Lab, while another division Wales Technologies handled distribution business for enterprise products.

Both these divisions contribute nearly 70% to the company's overall revenues, with the laptop accessories business displaying a 120% year-on-year growth. Besides these the company also have a service center for laptops, its own Bravish brand of products and a retail outlet.

One reason why Mediaman added such a huge number of products to its basket was to spread the risk of losses. The company kept on adding those items with held a chance of succeeding in the future. At the same time, it removed those products that became obsolete.

Mediaman added 100 authorized partners across 30 cities in 2003-04. It also tied up with Gigabyte and Acard as vendors and organized roadshows across seven cities to create awareness for these brands. Transcend is the highest contributor to the company's coffers, with the company selling close to 2,000 units monthly. Gigaybte and Acard are the other two leading brands and these three brands contribute 60% to the company's distribution revenues.

A significant activity undertaken by Mediaman last fiscal was the awareness campaigns against fake Transcend memory modules. It even released a list of suspected sellers of these counterfeits.

Mediaman also started distributing spare-parts of HP printers for half the price. It identified the manufacturer of HP products and started sourcing these items for sales in India.
